Simple Answers for a Simple Tool

Common Questions About SquirrelBak

1. What is SquirrelBak?
SquirrelBak is a lightweight, local backup tool that copies files from one computer to another over your home or office network. It’s fast, private, and runs without the cloud.detail...
2. Is SquirrelBak free?
Yes. SquirrelBak is completely free to download and use forever. No subscriptions, no trials, no paywalls.However...
3. Does it work over the internet?
No. SquirrelBak only works on your local network (same Wi-Fi or wired connection). This keeps your data safe and private — no remote access needed.
4. Do you collect my files or file names?
No. We do not collect file names, contents, or folder paths. The software only sees:
  • How many files are being backed up
  • What file types they are (like .jpg, .pdf, .docx)
Nothing leaves your network.
5. Where are my files backed up?
You choose the destination folder on the receiving computer. For example: D:\Backups\John or /Users/BackupPC/Sarah. SquirrelBak copies files directly to that location.
6. Can I back up multiple computers to one machine?
Yes! You can run multiple SquirrelBak Clients (on laptops/desktops) sending to one SquirrelBak Server. Each client can have its own folder.
7. Is my data encrypted?
Files are copied as-is (no encryption) because they stay on your trusted local network. If you need encryption, you can enable it at the system level (like BitLocker or FileVault) on the destination drive.
🔐 Tip: For extra security, use an encrypted external drive as your backup destination.
8. Does it run automatically?
Yes. Once set up, SquirrelBak runs in the background. It checks for new or changed files every 5 minutes (configurable) and backs them up silently.
9. What operating systems does it support?
Currently: Windows 10/11 and macOS 12+. Linux support is planned for a future update.
10. Is there a file size limit?
No. SquirrelBak can handle large files (videos, databases, etc.) as long as the destination drive has space.
11. What if the network drops during backup?
SquirrelBak will pause and retry when the connection is restored. It resumes from where it left off — no need to start over.
12. Can I exclude certain file types?
Not yet, but this feature is planned. Right now, it backs up all files in the selected folder.
13. How do I restore my files?
Since SquirrelBak copies files directly to a folder, restoring is as simple as browsing that folder and copying files back. No special tools needed — just drag and drop.
14. Is there a mobile app?
Not currently. SquirrelBak is designed for computers. But you can back up files from a computer that were synced from your phone (like photos or documents).
15. Who made SquirrelBak?
SquirrelBak is made by DoubleBlue — a small team that believes software should be simple, private, and honest. No investors. No ads. Just tools that work.
