Our Promise: Minimal Data Collection
SquirrelBak is built on one principle: your data belongs to you.
We do not collect, store, or transmit:
- Your file names (like
taxes_2025.pdf) - Your file contents (text, photos, videos)
- Your folder paths or directory structure
- Your device name or username
- Your network credentials (SMB passwords, etc.)
- Your usage patterns or backup schedule
What Little We Do Know
To keep the software working smoothly, SquirrelBak observes only two things during backup — and even that is optional.
1. Number of Files
Example: “There are 1,248 files in this folder.”
This helps track progress and ensure all files are copied completely.
2. File Extensions (Optional)
Example: “These are mostly .docx, .jpg, and .pdf files.”
This is used only for basic statistics and transfer optimization. You can turn it off anytime in Settings.
We never see: salary_review.docx, passport_scan.pdf, or any actual name.
When We See an IP Address (Briefly)
The only time we receive an IP address is when you download the software from our website.
We use it to:
- Detect general region (e.g., United States, Germany) for download analytics
- Improve server performance and CDN routing
The raw IP is automatically deleted within 7 days. It is never linked to your device or usage.
Error Reports? Only If You Agree
If SquirrelBak crashes, you may choose to send a diagnostic report.
This includes:
- Operating system version
- Software version
- Error stack trace (no file paths, no user data)
You can enable or disable error reporting at any time in Help → Settings → Privacy.
No Cloud. No Tracking. No Ads.
SquirrelBak does not:
- Connect to external servers during backup
- Upload your files to the cloud
- Use Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or any tracker
- Show advertisements or sponsored content
- Require accounts, logins, or email registration
It works silently between two machines on your network — just like a wire.
Why This Matters
In a world where every app wants your data, SquirrelBak is different.
We believe backup should be:
- Private - Your files stay yours
- Simple - No permissions, no popups
- Trusted - You know exactly what happens
If we don’t need it, we don’t collect it.
